When you're dealing with pelvic discomfort, you just want to know what it is and how to make it stop. While UTIs and yeast infections often feel similar, they require completely different medications. Treating a yeast infection with antibiotics, for example, can actually make the infection worse.

As a Nurse Practitioner serving California, I see women every day who are frustrated by these overlapping symptoms. Understanding the clinical differences is the first step toward the right treatment, whether that is over-the-counter relief or getting a UTI prescription online during a virtual visit.

The Quick Symptom Checklist

If you aren't sure which one you have, look for the "primary" source of the irritation. While there is a small chance you could have both simultaneously, most cases lean heavily one way or the other.

My Clinical Perspective

The "Internal vs. External" Rule: Generally, if the burning feels like it is happening *inside* as the urine passes, it is likely a UTI. If the burning feels like it's happening because the urine is touching irritated skin *outside*, it’s more likely a yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis (BV).

Don't Self-Diagnose with Old Antibiotics: Leftover antibiotics can destroy the "good" bacteria that keeps yeast in check, making a yeast infection flare up significantly. Getting the right diagnosis today prevents weeks of unnecessary discomfort.
